A 1600 crane display on BMT North Unit

Known as “peace” cranes, this project was selected because if its message. Sadako, a young girl from Japan, developed leukemia as a result of the bomb that was dropped in Hiroshima. While in the hospital, she made origami cranes and wrote on each crane, “I will write peace on your wings and you shall fly around the world.”

In the fall of 2009, the Healing Arts program at PSLMC started a project with Bone Marrow Transplant patients based on the Japanese legend, “If a person makes 1000 cranes, a wish will be granted.’ All patients desire peace during the treatment process and the ancient legend brings with it the wish of hope for a new future.

Connections between patients and staff developed and grew as the creating process was shared. Some cranes were large, some small, other were made with such detail, the creator had to use tweezers in the construction process. Inside rooms, at the nurse’s stations, in waiting rooms throughout the hospital, cranes created, carrying with each fold, each thought, the hope for peace and a new future.

The crane project will be fondly remembered by staff members in the years to come. One staff member reminisced, “It felt good being a part of a project where we were all working together for the good of the cause.” The crane panels are a tribute to patients’ amazing life stories and their contribution to the desire of peace for all within the walls of the BMT unit.
